VAHI is supporting health services to move to daily reporting of health incident data, helping to improve the safety and quality of health care delivered in Victoria’s public health services.

From 30 June 2022, Victorian public health services are required to report against the Victorian Health Incident Management System Minimum Dataset 2 (VHIMS 2 MDS), a standardised dataset designed to collect clinical and occupational health and safety incidents, near misses and hazards.

Over 80% of public health services are now able to transmit these data to the Victorian Department of Health, either via the VHIMS Central Solution platform or with VHIMS Application Programming Interface (API) adjustments to their own risk management and reporting software.

The goal is now for all health services to begin daily reporting of the VHIMS 2 MDS within the next 12 months.

VAHI and Safer Care Victoria are convening a forum for health services transmitting data via API on Thursday 23 June at 11am, to discuss how we can support them to establish daily incident reporting.

The forum will include discussions on how we will use near-real-time incident data to develop an early warning system that will make our health system safer for patients and our workforce. It will also cover options to automate the transmission of the VHIMS 2 MDS to reduce the administrative burden.

In addition to the forum, VAHI’s Safety and Surveillance team will also be contacting services directly to check on progress and provide further assistance to meet the 30 June 2022 deadline for initial VHIMS 2 MDS reporting.

You can register for the forum here. Further details including the agenda for the forum will be sent to people who have registered.
