About the report

The Victorian Population Health Survey (VPHS) is a unique and vital source of first-hand population health data for Victorian adults aged 18 years and older. It captures the voices and lived experiences of Victorians, offering insights into the health and wellbeing of the entire adult population—not just those who are unwell or accessing healthcare services. This comprehensive approach supports the principle that prevention is better than cure, enabling the identification of factors contributing to poor health and wellbeing. These insights inform the development of effective programs, policies, and planning to promote and protect public health.

Since 2008, the VPHS has operated on a three-year cycle. In two out of every three years, the survey is conducted at the state level with a sample of approximately 7,500 adults. Every third year, the survey expands to include data collection at the Local Government Area (LGA) level, with a significantly larger sample size of around 34,000 adults.

In 2023, the VPHS was conducted at the LGA level, with a sample of 33,839 adult respondents. The survey collects a wide range of data, including:

  • Social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, stress, and social exclusion.
  • Health risk factors, including smoking, food insecurity, and psychological distress.
  • Protective factors, such as social and emotional support.
  • Health literacy, beliefs, and attitudes.
  • Healthcare service use.
  • Physical and mental health status.

This rich dataset provides a foundation for understanding the health landscape of Victoria, guiding evidence-based decision-making to improve population health outcomes.
