Hospital emergency departments provide urgent care for seriously ill and injured Victorians. The emergency department is the destination for patients arriving at hospital via ambulance.

About the data
The above measures look at:
- patients transported by ambulance
- median transfer time
- percentage of patient transfers within 40 minutes.
About patients transported by ambulance
The total number of all patients arriving at an emergency department via ambulance.
Data excludes non-emergency patient transports.
About patient transfer time
The total time in minutes that it takes from when an ambulance arrives at an emergency department, to the time the patient is transferred to the hospital and handover is complete.
All transfer times are calculated from shortest to longest, and the time that sits in the middle is the median transfer time. The median transfer time is the time in which half of patient transfers were completed.
The 2022-23 statewide target for the percentage of ambulance-to-hospital patient transfers to occur within 40 minutes is 90%. The 2023–24 statewide target has not been finalised.
Data excludes non-emergency patient transports.
Notes
- Data source: Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD). Data extracted on 16 January 2024
- Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) presentations have been excluded from the calculation of all emergency indicators
- Presentations arriving by ambulance are not reported for Albury until the previous financial year closes in Q1
- Data on ambulance patient transfers is not reported for Albury
- Results for the current financial year are preliminary and may change from quarter to quarter, final results will be available in November. Results from the previous financial year have been finalised
- On 23 February 2023, Monash Health opened the Victorian Heart Hospital. The data displayed for the Victorian Heart Hospital from January to March 2023 represents the period from 23 February to 31 March.
