About the data:

The above measures look at:

  • pre-admission contact rate
  • post-discharge follow-up rate
  • bed occupancy rate
  • restraint episodes
  • seclusion episodes.

About pre-admission contact rate

The pre-admission contact rate is the proportion of all admissions to older adult inpatient units where a consumer had contact with a community mental health service in the 7 days prior to that admission.

The pre-admission contact rate for ongoing consumers is measured for those who had open/existing cases, and those who had a case closed within 7 days prior to admission to an older adult inpatient unit.

About post-discharge follow-up rate

The percentage of separations from older adult inpatient units where a service contact was recorded within 7 days.

Includes consumers discharged to a private residence or accommodation.

Excludes consumers who attended and left hospital the same day and consumers receiving a contact on the day of separation.

About bed occupancy rate

Percentage of available time a bed within an older adult inpatient unit is occupied by a consumer.

Excludes the period of time when a consumer temporarily leaves the inpatient unit to receive treatment from another facility.

About rate of restraint episodes per 1,000 occupied bed days

The rate of ended bodily restraint (mechanical or physical) episodes per 1,000 occupied bed days within older adult inpatient units.

Excludes consumers who attended and left hospital the same day, those who temporarily leave a facility to receive treatment from another facility, private beds and virtual wards.

About rate of seclusion episodes per 1,000 occupied bed days

The rate of ended seclusion episodes per 1,000 occupied bed days within older adult inpatient units.

Excludes consumers who attended and left hospital the same day, those who temporarily leave an inpatient unit to receive treatment from another facility, private beds, virtual wards and units that do not have a seclusion room.

A restrictive intervention may only be used after all reasonable and less restrictive options have been tried or considered and have been found to be unsuitable in the circumstances. A restrictive intervention includes seclusion, which means the sole confinement of a person to a room or any other enclosed space from which it is not within the control of the person confined to leave.

Notes

  • Data source: Client Management Interface/Operational Data Store. Data extracted on 10 April 2026.
  • Data on community service hours (and contacts) between February and August 2025 were affected by industrial activity. This has impacted the Jan-Mar 2025 to Jul-Sep 2025 results for pre-admission contacts and contacts in the community post-separation. Reported activity can appear lower than expected, as some consumers receiving a community service contact during these periods may not have had their contact recorded. Interpret with caution.
  • Results for the current financial year are preliminary and may change from quarter to quarter. Final results will be available in November. Results from the previous financial year have been finalised.
