Steve Graham is VAHI's Director of Platforms and Digital Innovation

How long have you been with VAHI and what was your background before working here?

It's coming up five years in December. Prior to that, I had a National Information Manager role with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority and then similar roles to my current role within the Department of Human Services in child protection, youth justice and family violence, across social and human services type programs.

I've been in health and human services since 2004, but the previous 20 years was in manufacturing, supply chain and logistics, so I've still got more private sector experience than I do public.

What is your role and how does your work area contribute to VAHI’s success?

The key elements of my current role are building and maintaining an enterprise data warehouse (a central repository of data from multiple sources) and all the information products that flow from it. Over the last few years we've built an enterprise platform, complete with data integration and backend data supply chain automation.

With information management, 70 to 80% of the effort is around back-end processes. Now we've got all that in place, it means that we can more rapidly and iteratively develop data visualisation products tailored for our customers user experience via a design thinking approach.

One thing that really underpins VAHI's success, is the fact that we’ve got a program of continuous improvement and integration. This means if you come to us with a set of requirements, you can have confidence that you'll have a good product coming out soon, which can be continuously refined.

What do you enjoy most about working at VAHI?

The thing that I really like about VAHI is that for the first time in my career, because were an information division, the line of business is data and information. We’re not selling widgets or something, our product is information.

There is an atmosphere of goodwill, with staff who go the extra mile, and we are doing meaningful work - doing the right things with data can ultimately lead to saving lives.
