Overall rating of care (Patient experience)
The Victorian Healthcare Experience Survey (VHES) asks patients about their experiences during their stay at a Victorian public health service. As part of the survey, patients rate the overall experience of their care.
Patient
A patient is a person for whom a hospital accepts responsibility for treatment and/or care. There are two categories of patient: admitted patient and non-admitted patient.
People Matter Survey
An annual survey of staff employed by Victoria’s public health services.
Plastic surgery
Surgery involving the modification or reconstruction of the visible physical features of the body.
Primary health care
The care you receive at your first point of contact with the health care system (e.g. when you see a physiotherapist for a sore back).
Private health sector
Health services not entirely funded by government and largely funded by private health insurance providers.
Procedure
An activity that may determine, measure, diagnose or improve a patient’s condition (e.g. surgical procedure, x-ray).
Prostatectomy
The removal of part or all of the prostate.

Ready for care patients
Available to be admitted to hospital having had necessary pre-admission tests or imaging. Have followed pre-admission instructions (e.g. fasting for surgery).
Seclusion
The Mental Health Act 2014 defines seclusion as ‘the sole confinement of a person at any hour of the day or night in a room of which the doors and windows are locked from the outside’. All seclusion events must meet legal and clinical requirements.
Separation
The process by which an episode of care for an admitted patient ceases (e.g. patient is discharged).
Septoplasty
Surgery to straighten the nasal septum.
